Football fans have often suggested five-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi will never be considered as the greatest of all time without winning a FIFA World Cup. Now the 1978 World Cup-winning coach of Argentina has opened up on the debate.
Cesar Luis Menotti led the South American side to footballs biggest prize on the international stage back in 1978 and he has now come to the defence of the FC Barcelona superstar.
Menotti argued that his status of a footballing legend has already been secured due to his club exploits with the Blaugrana, citing Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano as the prime example.
"Di Stefano didn't win a World Cup and neither did Omar Sivori," he told TNT Sports. "I hope he wins it, but his history is written with his 20 titles and his goals.
"I don't think he needs a World Cup to belong among the great football players of history.
"He is already there, that's understood."
