Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane rued a glaring error at the back that “gifted” Wydad Casablanca the equaliser in their CAF Champions League Group C opener.

The Brazilians began their continental campaign with a 1-1 draw against the defending champions at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Ismail El Haddad leveled matters for the Moroccan side with a header on 19 minutes after Sundowns went ahead after just three minutes into the first half.

Mosimane claims the mistakes his side made at this level are costly, and they have paid a heavy price for them.

“We let them [Wydad] off the hook... one mistake at the back, it's nearly the same mistake we committed against Maritzburg when Denis [Onyango] missed the ball and [Tebogo] Langerman lost concentration. We gave them a gift, from South Africa to Morocco,” Mosimane told SuperSport TV.

“They were happy [to take a point] we pushed them back, they can’t take the pressure, they have to sit back, they’re playing for a point, that’s smart.

“But the goalkeeper kills time hey. He reminds me of one of the goalkeepers in South Africa. But it’s okay, we tried to win.

“Esperance and all come here and park the bus. What can you do? But we tried. These are the champions of Africa and we put them under pressure.

"We could have done it better but I’m not unhappy with the performance of the boys, it’s mistakes, we pay a heavy [price] for our mistakes.

“These guys were never there. The only way they could score is through set-pieces, that’s all.”
