Even though he will be without top marksman Percy Tau, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane believes his men can get the job done against Wydad Casablanca at Lucas Moripe Stadium tonight.
Sundowns host the defending CAF Champions League champions in their opening group C match, looking to get revenge after the Moroccans knocked them out in the quarterfinals last year.
They’ll have to get the job done with the suspended Tau, who has arguably been the club’s best player this season.
Mosimane believes the return of attacking midfielder Khama Billiat will boost his attacking options. Gaston Sirino is also available after missing Sundowns’ last two Absa Premiership matches through suspension.
"It [the absence of Tau] is okay. Khama is also there to help after return from his injuries.
Sirino, who was not part of the Ajax Cape Town game and also against Maritzburg United, is back, so we should not be complaining about Percy not [being] available,” said Mosimane.
"Of course we miss him, he is an influential member of the team, but we must not make excuses that Percy is not available and we will not play or win. We have a strong enough team to compete,” he added.
Wydad, who had their first training in South Africa on Thursday, are on a good run of form in their domestic league.
"They look good. They [are a] decent team,” said Mosimane.
"We have been checking on them. They have not lost in their last 13 games. They won all of them, if I am not mistaken.
“Wydad are always a difficult team for us. We beat them 1-0 here. They beat us 1-0 there [in Morocco], but we lost on penalties. They were better than us on penalties.”
Sundowns will go into the game following the news that they will play Spanish giants Barcelona in an end of season friendly at FNB Stadium on May 16.
