Cape Town City striker Siphelele Mthembu says he is not worrying about how many goals he scores as long as he is contributing to the team’s success.

Mthembu has never been a prolific  scorer, offering more as a targetman that brings his teammates into play with his ability to hold up the ball and operate with his back to goal.

The ex-Kaizer Chiefs forward, who left Amakhosi as a free agent in 2017 after failing to impress at Naturena, scored six goals  in 30 games for Free State Stars in 2017/18 before linking up with City.

Mthembu, who has netted once in six outings this season, says he is unfazed by criticism that he doesn’t score enough.

''It doesn't matter for me and criticism is just a step to go to glory,'' Mthembu tells KickOff.com

''I've been working hard with the team and you know when you stick to the principles it always works for the team. If you are going to be taken away by supporters’ [criticism], you move out of your comfort zone ... it is where you have to stand and fight for the team.

''For me it’s all about Cape Town City for me.''

The 31-year-old, who also lifted the Nedbank Cup with Stars in May, derives strength from his faith.

He adds: ''It’s all God, to be honest I couldn't do that without God.

''I think from now on it’s always hard work, hard work, hard work all the way.''

Citizens coach Benni McCarthy opted to start the physically imposing Mthembu ahead of fellow new signing Matthew Rusike in the MTN8 final in Durban last weekend, which the coastal outfit won 4-1 on penalties against former cup holders SuperSport United.
