With reserve team coach Santiago Solari being appointed as caretaker coach after Julen Lopetegui’s inevitable sacking, it’s been revealed why Antonio Conte has yet to unveiled as the new head coach.
Lopetegui lasted just 14 games in charge at Real after being sacked from the national team over his controversial appointment prior to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
In the club’s official statement, he would be ‘provisionally replaced’ by Castilla coach Solari.
“The board of directors of Real Madrid FC […] has agreed to terminate the contract that linked coach Julen Lopetegui with the club,” reads the statement.
“This decision, adopted from the highest level of responsibility, aims to change the dynamics of the first team, when all the objectives of this season are still achievable.
“The board of directors understands that there is a great disproportion between the quality of the staff of Real Madrid, which has 8 players nominated for the next Golden Ball, something unprecedented in the history of the club, and the results obtained to date.”
Spanish publication Marca has since reported that Conte’s demands has put off club President Florentino Perez.
The 49-year-old Italian wants the option for him to sign a centre-back to use in a three-man backline at Madrid, similar to the 3-5-2 formation that he would use during his time at Juventus and Chelsea.
Conte would also want to bring in another striker to the team, as a poacher to lead the line.
This has reportedly brought further doubt into the minds of senior figures in Los Blancos dressing room as his demanding ways to do things his way or the highway would not go down well with a squad.
It’s been claimed the team would prefer to be treated as respected equals – as they were by Zidane – rather than being strictly disciplined by an authoritarian coach.
Manchester United boss José Mourinho and Mauricio Pochetino are names floating around as possible alternatives, while Belgium manager Roberto Martínez has recently emerged as a strong contender.
