Brazil superstar Neymar could be facing up to six years imprisonment over the alleged irregularities of his transfer to FC Barcelona.
The 26-year-old who left Barca in a world-record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain is currently embroiled in a controversial dispute over the legalities upon his first move to Europe back in 2013.
Upon joining the LaLiga giants from Santos, the Blaugrana confirmed the deal to be worth €57.1m, however, upon further investigation it was revealed that the total cost amounted to €86.2m.
Neymar’s parents were said to have profited €40 million sum of the fee, while third-party organisations from his homeland also received a significant figure – which was not declared by the Spanish giants.
In the aftermath, Barca and Josep Maria Bartomeu and former President Sandro Rosell – who is now behind bars – were charged with tax fraud.
Prosecutors were initially seeking a two-year sentence for the now PSG player for the alleged irregularities related the deal five years ago, but the court said on Wednesday a sentence of four to six years could be handed down if Neymar is found guilty.
The decision is a setback for Neymar because in Spain sentences of two years or less for first offences are usually suspended, meaning he would avoid any jail time.
