A number of South Africans were involved in cup and league fixtures on Wednesday night, with Thulani Serero and Lebogang Phiri both tasting success with their respective sides abroad.
Serero’s Dutch club Vitesse were in KNVB Beker action away at Heracles, who sit just one spot above them in the Eredivisie standings. Having beaten them 4-0 in the league earlier this month, Vitesse were favourites to once again emerge victorious, and did just that with a comfortable 2-0 victory, as Serero played the full 90 minutes is his 11th start of the campaign. Vitesse are now through to the Last 16 of the competition, and will find out their next opponents following Saturday’s draw.
In France, Ligue 1’s bottom-placed side Guingamp had a chance to put their league woes on hold as they faced off against Angers in the Coupe de la Ligue. Phiri was named in the starting line-up for just the fourth time this season, playing the entire game which ended in a goalless draw, and thus went to penalties, with Guingamp winning 3-2 to advance to the next round.
Elsewhere, Keaghan Jacobs’s Scottish club Livingston suffered their first defeat in eight matches, losing 1-0 to St Johnstone to now sit sixth on the table, while in Belgium, Kurt Abrahams’ Westerlo were narrow 1-0 winners over KSV Roeselare in their league match-up, the three points lifting them up to third on the log after 12 games played.
