Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has broken silence on his international exile from European champions Portugal since the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Ronaldo, 33, failed to add to his 154 caps after Russia 2018 and reports in Portuguese media claimed the rape allegations made against the nations’ all-time leading scorer was a contributing factor to his omission.
But the Juve club-record signing, who has scored 15 goals in 24 games for the Serie A champions has now cleared the air.
“In 2019 I intend to be back at the disposal of the coaching staff,” Ronaldo told Record.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner confirmed that he held an agreement with the Football Federation of his country to skip his national team commitments to focus solely on his club career after his record-breaking Real Madrid exit.
“It was agreed that I would not be in the games of the first half of the season,” he said.
“I am 33 years old, I had just moved from country to country, working methods, team-mates, professional and personal routines.
“I think it was the best option.”
In his absence, Fernando Santos’ side qualified for the 2019 UEFA Nations League semi-finals.
