1930: King’s Park’s Jim Dyet marked his debut with a British league record eight goals in the Scottish League Division Two defeat of Forfar.

1939: A crowd of 118,567 watched Rangers play Celtic at Ibrox.

1971: A barrier collapsed during a Rangers v Celtic fixture at Ibrox. As a result 66 spectators were killed and 145 injured.

2000: Manchester United arrived in Rio de Janeiro for the World Club Challenge guarded by armed police on round-the-clock duty.

2013: Liverpool signed Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge on a long-term contract.

2014: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed Cardiff manager, just six days after the sacking of Malky Mackay.

2016: Sussex fast bowler Matthew Hobden died aged 22.

2017: Michael van Gerwen completed a remarkable 12 months by claiming his second PDC World Championship title with a stunning 7-3 victory over Gary Anderson at Alexandra Palace.
