There were mixed results for South African players involved in footballing action over the past few festive season days, with Mihlali Mayambela’s two assists the highlight.

Jacobs heads into 2019 having played all 19 league games for Scottish Championship club Queen of the South, having played the full 90 minutes in their last fixture, a 1-1 draw with AYR United, which leaves them sitting sixth on the 10-team log after 19 games.

In their last fixture of 2018, Mayambela bagged two assists in his 14th game of the season as Portuguese second-tier club Farense humbled 10-man Oliveirense 5-0, leaving them sixth in the standings after 15 games.

Following his long injury lay-off, Mokotjo has now started four of Brentford’s last five matches after putting in a full 90 minute shift on New Year’s Day in his 19th league appearance of the season as Brentford played out a 1-1 draw with Norwich City, leaving them 18th on the Championship log after 26 games.

Making his first start since the end of October, the defender had a New Year’s Day to forget in his 11th appearance of the season for League One side Rochdale, who went down 5-0 to Doncaster Rovers. Having conceded nine goals in their last two games, Rochdale now sit 17th on the table after 26 matches played.

The South African-born fullback made his first start of the season for Italian club Empoli, who went down 1-0 to heavyweights Inter Milan, leaving them 17th on the log after 19 matches, just three points above safety.
