Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp will not allow Mamelodi Sundowns counterpart Pitso Mosimane’s compliments to get to his head ahead of their crunch Absa Premiership clash this weekend.

Chiefs are set to welcome Sundowns in a humdinger opening fixture of 2019 for both sides at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 15h30.

Amakhosi and The Brazilians will both be desperate to get the year off to a good start as they lag behind the peloton in the championship race after the first round of fixtures, although Downs still have three games in hand.

The stature of this fixture has also grown significantly in recent years, after the two Gauteng giants exchanged the title between themselves over a four-year period prior to Stuart Baxter’s departure, and this tie is set to be no less feisty between Mosimane and Middendorp.

‘Jingles’ – skilled in the art of mind games – recently paid homage to the German tactician and his knack for instiling discipline at whichever team he works, but the former Maritzburg United mentor is privy to these sort of mind games as he refused to get carried away by the flattery.

“It’s always a pleasure [to get complimented], and I think that shows respect. In both directions, it’s always a pleasure to have competitive games with a coaching area led by Pitso,” said Middendorp.

“That’s all I can tell you, but I’m enjoying it very much so let’s wait and see [on Saturday]. He has ideas, I have ideas, and we know each other a little bit over the years in the past.

“I’d say thank you, first of all, and I can definitely give this compliment back. I think he’s definitely in this business long enough that he knows how to play these games of complimenting everyone a little bit. But, I’m 60-years-old and I’m not getting carried away.”
