Highlands Park coach Owen da Gama praised his players for showing no fear against Orlando Pirates on Saturday evening.
The Lions of the North began the year with a point after playing out a 2-2 draw with the Soweto giants in a game where they took the lead twice.
The former Bafana Bafana assistant coach was particularly impressed with how his charges took the game to Pirates.
“We came out and went at them. We gave it a good go. We tried our best. They are the best team. They’ve assembled some of the best players in the country,” Da Gama told SuperSport TV.
“We have players who are still finding themselves in the PSL. But credit must go to the players. They played with heart and soul. They showed no fear.
“A lot of teams lose against Pirates before the game is played. But we just got that out of the way and we said ‘let’s go out and play’.
“Even if we lose 6-4 but we’re going to score! And we made sure we score. We had to be better than what happened in the last game [in the first round] I thought we were much better.
“With Mothobi [Mvala] there a little bit we could have had more strength in midfield. But in saying that I’m proud of the boys and congratulate Pirates. They came back twice, you gotta give them credit. They’re a quality team, there’s no wonder why they are sitting where they are [on the table].
“I’m just happy, it was a great game for the fans,” he said.
