Protester killed in latest Sudan demos: official

One protester was killed during an anti-government demonstration in the city of Omdurman on Thursday, a senior Sudanese official told reporters.

“One protester has died in Omdurman today,” Amer Ibrahim, chief of a committee at the prosecutor’s office that is investigating violence during nationwide demonstrations, said at a press conference.

Ibrahim did not specify how the protester was killed.

Ibrahim said that another demonstrator who was wounded at a demonstration on January 13 in Khartoum had also died.

“Until now 29 people have died in demonstrations,” Ibrahim said.

Rights groups have put the overall death toll at more than 40 since protests erupted across Sudan on December 19 after a government decision to triple the price of bread.

Hundreds of people took to the streets on Thursday in Omdurman, the twin city of Khartoum across the Nile, but they were confronted by riot police with tear gas, witnesses said.

Apart from Omdurman, simultaneous rallies were launched across several Sudanese cities and towns.

The protests that have rocked Sudan since last month have turned into nationwide anti-government demonstrations, with crowds demanding an end to President Omar al-Bashir’s three decades of rule.
