FC Barcelona thrashed Sevilla 6-1 to secure a spot in the Copa del Rey semi-finals on Wednesday evening.

Barca faced the unenviable task to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit, but a 13th minute penalty from Phillipe Coutinho gave the hosts a dream start.

The visitors nearly grabbed a third goal in the tie on 23 minutes, but alert goalkeeping from Jasper Cillessen tipped Andre Silva’s header onto the crossbar.

A minute later, a foul by Gerard Pique on Roque Mesa gave Sevilla a chance to get on the scoresheet from the penalty spot. However, Cillessen went the right way to keep out Ever Banega’s attempt.

Shortly after 30 minutes, Barca levelled the aggregate score thanks to a composed finish from Ivan Rakitic to double the hosts’ lead on the night.

In the 54th minute, Soriano could do nothing to keep Coutinho from slotting home a cross by Luis Suarez to give the Catalans the overall lead.

Two minutes later, Sergi Roberto extended the home side’s cushion further after sweeping home a well-weighted pass from Messi.

The visitors did pull a goal back in the 68th minute as after a poor defensive clearance found Banega, who set-up Guilherme Arana to smash the ball past Cillessen with a first-time strike.

However, Sevilla’s come back was uprooted by Suarez, who finished off a magically worked counterattack at the back post to bag Barca’s fifth.

Every Barca match wouldn’t be complete without Messi having a say, as the skipper finished off a stunning move with a plunging finish past Soriano to complete the come back.
