Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka has reflected on how their ongoing trophy drought feels like a dark cloud hanging over their heads but remains confident of ending it this season.
Chiefs are closing in on four years since last lifting silverware, back to when they bagged the 2014/15 Absa Premiership title under current Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter.
The ongoing dry run is Amakhosi’s longest in their history and the players have seen plenty of flack come their way upon every failed attempt at bringing in to an end.
Currently in the running for the Nedbank Cup, while still holding slim chances of creeping up the league table, Maluleka, who was part of the squad that lasted tasted league success in 2015, is poised over Chiefs’ chances of success under coach Ernst Middendorp come May.
“For Chiefs – the brand – to go all these years without silverware is painful, and as players to go into each day with that at the back of your mind is a lot to digest,” said Maluleka.
“We still have a chance this season, we’re not writing ourselves off, so there’s still hope, and we won’t give up – we still believe anything is possible.
“I believe we’ve turned the corner, we’ve been doing very well under a different coach with a different style of play, which we’ve managed to adapt to.
“I have good faith that we will come up with something this season, I really do.”
After claiming a share of the spoils in the weekend’s Soweto Derby, The Glamour Boys sit nine points off log leaders Bidvest Wits with 10 games remaining, while they next meet ABC Motsepe League outfit The Magic FC in their Nedbank Cup Last 16 clash on Saturday.
