Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Kabelo Mahlasela has discussed his ideal position in which he believes he can perform at his best for the club.
Mahlasela has yet to live up to expectations since arriving at Chiefs from Bloemfontein Celtic in January last year under plenty of excitement from the club’s supporters.
After missing the first six months of his stay due to injury, the 27-year-old is still trying to find his feet at Naturena and has managed only three starts – something he has admitted is a concern.
However, with competition in the likes of Lebogang Manyama having since been sidelined through a long-term injury, the diminutive attacker has set his sights on the number-10 role which is currently being occupied by Hendrick Ekstein.
“The ideal position for me? I strongly feel I can do much better in the number-10 position because I’m a player who likes to take players on and create opportunities,” said Mahlasela.
“I like to also score goals, even though I miss a lot [of chances] these days, but I like getting into those positions and I think I could do well the number-10 position.
“I’m more of a free-role player, and football nowadays is more about tactics and how you think during a game, finding yourself in half-spaces and all that.”
With coach Ernst Middendorp having recently trumpeted Ekstein as one who can “carry the team”, it will be difficult for Mahlasela to try and unseat his teammate.
