Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane says it was vital to close down Cape Town City duo Teko Modise and Thato Mokeke.

Sundowns moved to the top of the Absa Premiership table following a 3-2 win over the Citizens on Wednesday night.

“It’s always good to have five goals for people who come to the Stadium. It’s a thriller, it’s stress, it’s good. Good game,” Mosimane told SuperSport TV.

“I didn’t see the penalty to be honest. I told them at halftime that 1-0 is not going help us, we need a two goal cushion in this game because I know Cape Town City don’t park the bus. They play and they will come at us, that’s exactly what they did.

“Credit must to Benni [McCarthy] his team plays well but we had to shut-down the midfield. We shut-down Teko [Modise] and don’t give Thato Mokete enough time on the ball. We closed Teko down hence Benni took him out. He’s a good player and can distribute the balls. ‘Keke’ [Hlompho Kekana] played a little bit stronger on him.”

The former Bafana Bafana mentor added that the third goal scored by Phakamani Mahlambi was crucial to establish a two-goal cushion as City pulled a goal back in stoppage time.

“Very important goal [third goal by Phakamani Mahlambi], what a pass from Themba Zwane. I thought he was going to go for it himself and not pass and he passed hey. It’s unbelievable. It’s a big goal, look what happened at the end.

“But let’s be honest, we should have scored two or three more hey. Inasmuch as they are a good team, we had a lot of chances, as I always say Sundowns can miss!”
