A goal late in the second half from Angel Correa spared Argentina blushes as they escaped with a 1-0 victory over Morocco in an international friendly at the Grand Stade de Tanger on Tuesday evening.
It was a very hostile atmosphere inside the stadium. The hostility spilled over on to the pitch with neither side backing off and the referee was being kept busy with the challenges coming in thick and fast.
Morocco dominated possession, enjoying over 60 percent of the ball in the first half – surprising given their more illustrious opponents. In the 11th minute, the Atlas Lions broke clear through Younes Belhanda, who played in Khalid Boutaib but his shot was tame and straight at Esteban Andrada in the Argentine goal.
In the 32nd minute, Argentina came close. Leandro Paredes drilled a free-kick from distance which deflected off Lautaro Martinez and bounced just wide of the right post.
Scaloni would have been frustrated that Paulo Dybala and Roberto Pereyra were seeing very little of the ball. It was very combative for a friendly, with 27 fouls made in the opening half alone.
Very soon after the interval, a cross bounced all the way to Pereyra at the back post. The Watford winger attempted to hit it goalwards from the angle, but he was off balance and it went over the bar.
It was a very scrappy start to the second half with neither side able to string many passes together. In the 58th minute, Romain Saiss came to the hosts’ rescue when he cleared from the six-yard line and in doing so prevented a couple of Argentina forwards from tapping the ball home.
Neither side could muster a shot on target in the second half until the 83rd minute, when Correa scored out of nowhere. The Atletico Madrid forward drifted over from the left flank, carried the ball along the edge of the area and hit a right-footed shot back across goal to hand his side the lead.
Despite a few nervy moments in the final ten minutes, Scaloni’s men held on for victory.
