Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana has achieved a childhood dream by being part of the Bafana Bafana squad that has qualified for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Kekana has won and achieved it all at club level and now he will be hoping to get an opportunity to play at the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in his career.

Bafana beat Libya 2-1 in Sfax on Sunday to finish their qualifying campaign unbeaten. Kekana came on as a substitute and almost scored from range, when he spotted the Libyan goalkeeper off his line.

Now the former SuperSport United and Bloemfontein Celtic will have to ensure he stays on form and avoids injury to make the final squad that will take part in the competition set to be held in Egypt.

“It’s a special feeling. I’m very proud of some of the achievements I’ve achieved so far in my football career and qualifying for major tournaments is always one of the goals I have,” Kekana tells

“When I check, this is one of the things I had written in my notes when I was young, that I want to see myself qualifying to play at AFCON.

Going to AFCON will be something special for me. I’ve ticked many boxes in my career – I’ve won the league, the Champions League, Super Cup and now I was part of the team that helped South Africa qualify for AFCON. It’s really a special moment.”
