Rose Namajunas shocked the MMA world five months ago and at UFC 223 on Saturday night she proved it was no fluke.
Fighting in front of a frothing Barclays Center crowd, the UFC women’s strawweight champion beat Joanna Jedrzejczyk (14-2) via unanimous decision. All three judges had it 49-46.
“I felt a little heavy but I got the job done, so it’s all good,” Namajunas said in typically low-key style after the fight. “I believe her that she had a tough weight cut and it affected her last time, but this one means I’m just better.”
Jedrzejczyk, the former champ, came out with a frantic energy that was missing from their first fight at Madison Square Garden in November. Namajunas (9-3) was once again her calm, cool and collected self.
The first two rounds were closely contested as the fighters felt each other out — Namajunas with her thumping punches and Jedrzejczyk with quick and painful leg kicks. It was Namajunas’ power, however, that was dictating the terms of fight. Jedrzejczyk, normally a fluid and aggressive striker, was forced to hold back.
In the third round, Jedrzejczyk (14-2) seemed to shift the momentum with her jab and thwacking kicks. The next round was tougher to judge which made the fifth feel like it could be the decider.
That’s when an honest to goodness fight broke out. Namajunas connected early with her right hand and Jedrzejczyk returned fire with quick combinations. The champion then landed a clean lead uppercut and grabbed a takedown with about 30 seconds left that proved her superiority.
Namajunas has defeated the previously undefeated Jedrzejczyk twice in five months. In the first fight, at UFC 217, Namajunas got the victory thanks to a perfect first-round left hook. Saturday night Namajunas did it with tight, technical strikes.
The sky is now the limit for Namajunas. She is just 25-years-old and is improving every time she gets in the cage. Just ask Jedrzejczyk who couldn’t deal with Namajunas new-found precision.
For Jedrzejczyk, it is back to the drawing board. Where once she was an undefeated juggernaut of a champion, she’s now on a two-fight losing streak.
