Accidental gunshot from officer's sidearm causes panic at wrestling meet

FOWLERVILLE, MI - An accidental gunshot during a youth wrestling meet caused a panic at Fowlerville High School on Saturday.

The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 5 at a multi-school wrestling meet, the Fowlerville Police Department said in a Facebook post.

An off-duty police officer was standing on the gym floor watching the meet when his firearm accidentally discharged, police said.

The bullet was lodged into the wood floor of the court, police said.

 

Fowlerville police did not identify the police officer as of 5 p.m. Saturday.

A witness said the shot caused a panic, as people hurried out of the gymnasium. One person was treated for a twisted ankle.

The meet resumed an hour after the shot occured, police said.

The incident remains under investigation, police said. A report is expected to be filed with the Livingston County Prosecutor, police said.

Fowlerville is about 20 miles east of Lansing.
