Call him Johnny Football again.
Johnny Manziel, 25, returned to the field for the first time since December 2015 and showed flashes of his Heisman form by throwing a touchdown in the South’s 11-7 loss to the North in the Spring League on Saturday night at Kelly Reeves Stadium in Austin, Texas
“As frustrated as I am now, I made it through the two quarters that I did play. I’m healthy. I had fun,” Manziel told reporters after the game. “The touchdown in the first quarter was fun. It’s just a sour, sour taste right now [after a loss].”
He got his first touchdown in 832 days, rolling right under pressure and tossing a short pass to Antwan Goodley in the right corner of the end zone to help give the South a 7-3 lead in the second quarter.
“I got hit. I hit the ground pretty hard and I just kind got up.” Manziel said of the touchdown throw. “It was more about hearing what happened in the stands that what happened. I was like, ‘It felt good to get hit that hard again.’ ”
Manziel will be back on the field for another game on Thursday. Though he finished down on the scoreboard, just suiting up is a win for him right now.
“No matter where I end up, no matter what happens football-wise, at least my life, at least I’ve repaired a lot of relationships that needed work,” Manziel said. “I repaired a lot of myself that needed work, and I’m able to run back on a field which is something I didn’t know if I’d ever get a chance to do again.
“It’s disappointing in some of the things that happened but nevertheless this is a huge step for me. I put pads back on and a lot people wrote me off to even be able to get to this point.”
