Kenya: Egyptian Giants Zamalek Arrive, Warn Gor Mahia

Egyptian giants Zamalek have warned Gor Mahia ahead of their opening Caf Confederation Cup group “D” clash on Sunday at the Moi International Sports stadium, Kasarani.

The White Knights jetted into the country in the wee hours of Friday and have pitched camp at a Nairobi hotel.

They will feel the pitch on Saturday from 4pm.

“It’s always good to start the group stage with a victory. Gor Mahia game is going to be difficult, but we have to give our all, whether the game is at home or away,” Zamalek coach Christian Gross is quoted on the Confederation of African Football (Caf) website.

“I have asked the players to forget about the domestic league and focus on our continental mission,” added the 64-year-old, whose side registered a 4-1 win over Misr Makasa on Tuesday to open a six-point gap in the Egyptian Premier League.

They top the 18-team log with 45 points with two games in hand, while money-bags Pyramids are second.

“It’s a totally different competition now and we have to be 100 per cent focused from the start to the end.”

Zamalek have nine Caf club titles to their name; five champions league, three Super Cup and one Cup Winners’ Cup before it was renamed the current Confederation Cup.

Zamalek edged out Chad’s AS Coton Sport 7-2 on aggregate in the first round before seeing off Moroccan side Ittihad Tanger 3-1 aggregate score in the first round to reach the group stage of this second-tier interclub championship for the first time since 2015.

Algerian side Nasr Hussein Day hosts Petro Atletico in Algiers in the other Group “D” game also on Sunday.
