Tanzania: Nine Injured in Dar Commuter Train Accident


Dar es Salaam — Nine people were injured early morning Friday after two passenger wagons of a commuter train plying between Dar es Salaam city centre and Pugu station derailed,the Railways Police Commander David Mnyambugha confirmed to The Citizen.

The accident happened at the Karakata area near the Julius Nyerere International Airport, according to Police reports.

The commuter trains, which startedservices in October 2012 to ease congestion are operated by the Tanzania Railway Corporation. Commuter trains were also introduced on the Tanzania Zambia Railways Authority tracks.But since the commencement of the services safety has always been an issue of concern.

Alarm over safety on Dar commuter train

Mnyambugha said the wagons were so damaged that they couldnot continue operating without comprehensive repairs.

“The nine injured people were taken to hospital. We are also working hard to remove the damaged wagons to free the railways,” said Mnyambugha.

The cause of the accident was not immediately established.
