Mbarara — 30-year-old woman is battling for life after she and her two children were attacked with acid.
Ms Constance Kyompeire, Roderick Andinda, 3, and Treasure Akandinda, 2, have been admitted to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital after an unknown person poured acid on them.
According to Mr Aaron Amura, his wife and the children were attacked on Tuesday evening at their home in Nyakaguruka Village, Kitunguru Parish in Rugando Sub-county.
“It was at around 7:30pm when my wife told me that she felt some headache and asked me to get her some tablets. As soon as I left home for the trading centre, which is about a kilometre away, I received a phone call from our neighbours that someone had poured acid on my wife and children,” Mr Amura said.
Mr Amura said his wife was the target as her face, arms, chest, thighs and legs were severely burnt and she cannot stand nor talk.
The children were affected by the splashes and are out of danger.
The officer-in-charge of criminal investigations department at Mbarara Central Police Station, Mr Bosco Mutabazi, said they are hunting the assailant.
“These are rare cases and we are sure we shall get the assailants. In three years this is the second case in Mbarara. The other incident involved councillor Amos Katureebe and we are happy with how court is handling the case,” Mr Mutabazi said.
Mr Mutabazi warned people against taking the law in their hands but instead use police and courts of law in case they have disagreements.
“This is a very unfortunate incident. We shall charge the suspects with attempted murder and sentence them to life imprisonment once we find them,” Mr Mutabazi said.
As a security measure, Mr Mutabazi advised residents to always keep dogs at home, saying they scare away the assailants.
The LC5 councillor for Nyamityobora Ward, Mr Amos Katureebe, was on November 9, 2017, attacked with acid as he walked towards his home in the evening. Acid disfigured his face. Four people were arrested and charged with attempted murder. One was sentenced to 20 years in jail for pleading guilty to the charges.
