Uganda: Omoro Car-Crash Leaves One Dead, Four Others Critically Injured


Omoro — One person has been confirmed dead and four others critically injured after a truck they were traveling in overturned about one kilometre from Gulu-Kampala Highway on Friday morning.

The Fuso truck registration number UAP132Z loaded with Charcoal from Paboo Sub-county in Amuru District reportedly overturned along Tochi-Abwoch Abili road in Tochi Village, Onganko Sub-county, Omoro District at about 7am.

Police identified the deceased only as Tamale, a resident of Kayunga while the injured are Katerega Nuru, 30, Sinabulya, Magalu, 24 and Henry Bate all residents of Mukono District.

It’s reported that the truck was carrying nine passengers on board by the time of the accident but four escaped unhurt.

The Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson told Daily Monitor in an interview Friday that the injured were rushed to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor where they have been admitted and receiving medical treatment.

Mr Okema said preliminary findings indicate that the driver lost control of the truck after it had developed mechanical problem before veering off the road and hit an ant hill.

This is the fourth fatal accident that has happened within a space of only three days claiming five lives since the year started, according to police reports.

On Tuesday, three people died in similar accident along the Kampala-Gulu highway after a charcoal truck registration number UAN 533U they were travelling in overturned as it was approaching Karuma Bridge.

The Police reported that the truck driver lost control of the vehicle which was overloaded with charcoal and some passengers before it overturned.

The driver, one Ronald Ejalu died instantly. Other passengers, Hussein Kafeero and Ronald Ijalo also died of injuries a few moments after the accident.
