Uganda: Two Dead, Five Injured in Two Separate Accidents Along Kampala-Masaka Road


Mpigi — Two people have been confirmed dead and five others seriously injured following two separate accidents that occurred along the Kampala-Masaka highway.

According to police, the first accident happened last night at Mpigi – Bikondo and it involved two sand trucks.

Police said the deceased (not yet identified) were drivers of the two sand trucks.

“The sand trucks collided head-on and forced them to veer off the road and eventually overturned. The accident occurred at about 9pm on Thursday and both vehicles were towed and currently parked at Mpigi Central Police Station,” Mr Phillip Mukasa, Katonga region Police Spokesperson said.

Police said they spent a lot of time trying to remove the trapped bodies from the wreckages and later taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

Another accident occurred at Nabbuzi village in Kamengo Sub County on the same road and at least five people got serious injuries.

According to Mr Alex Muramuzi, the officer in charge of traffic and road safety at Kamengo Police Station, the accident occurred at about 8am on Friday.

It happened after a sand truck registration number UBE 667H knocked a commuter taxi registration number UBB 218M from behind as the driver of the former was trying overtake the latter.

“We have the sand truck driver in our custody pending investigations into the matter. Our preliminary results show that he was driving carelessly. We have taken all the injured people to Gombe Hospital to receive treatment,” Mr Muramuzi told this reporter.

The car wreckages were towed to Kamengo Police Station.
