Zimbabwe: SA Opposition Member Among Trio Killed for Poaching in Zimbabwe


Chiredzi — GAME rangers have shot dead three suspected poachers for the killing of rhinoceros southeast of Zimbabwe.

One of the suspects has been found in possession of South African identity documents, including a membership card of the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and a drivers’ license.

He has been identified as Hardlife Mukombi (aged 44).

The deceased and another suspect named as Owiwi Oguingwi Verdy Gotora as well as another who was unidentified have been shot dead in the Malilangwe Conservancy in Chiredzi near Gona reZhou National Park.

Police reported the trio had gained entry into the conservancy before rangers spotted them.

They reportedly ignored warning shots and opened fire on the rangers, resulting on the fatal shootout.

Law enforcers recovered a rifle, six rounds of live ammunition, axes and knives.

Other items found include food, drugs suspected to be dagga.

The fatal shooting occurred a month after four black rhinos were poached in Save Valley Conservancy, another privately-owned animal sanctuary in Chiredzi.

Zimbabwean rangers have adopted a shoot-to-kill-policy to address the rampant killing of the endangered species.
