White House chief of staff John Kelly has gone back to an old tactic: threatening to quit.
Kelly blew up at President Donald Trump in an Oval Office meeting on March 28, Axios reported Saturday. As he departed, he was overheard muttering that he was going to hand in his notice.
The blowup was not tied to the firing of Veterans Administration David Shulkin, which occurred the same day, sources said.
Kelly was angry enough to begin packing up personal items, according to the report. It took a visit from Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, a close ally, to talk him down.
“It was more venting frustration” than an actual threat, a senior administration official said.
Kelly has been known to issue such ultimatums before – and to use them strategically.
In his first weeks as Trump’s top deputy, he frequently stated an intention to flounce from the White House as a method of getting staffers – and Trump himself, according to a January report in the New York Times – to follow his orders.
Kelly has denied several times that he has threatened to leave the chief of staff job, which he has called “the hardest job I have ever had.”
