Wales rugby coach Warren Gatland is being urged to put his faith in Kiwi Gareth Anscombe as his first-choice first-five for the looming Six Nations clash with England.
Having started at first-five in Wales’ Six Nations opening win over France in Paris, Anscombe was benched for his side’s second round clash against Italy in Rome, coming off the bench in a tight 26-15 victory.
With Gatland’s side next in action against the impressive England, former Wales first-five Barry John is urging for Anscombe to be picked ahead of Dan Biggar for the blockbuster clash.
“I still believe Gareth Anscombe is the outside-half who should start what will be monumental and potentially Six Nations Championship decider at the Principality Stadium in a couple of weeks,” Johns wrote for Wales Online.
“He is full of inventiveness, possesses some lovely touches, takes his fellow players into the danger areas and makes things happen.
“I’ve repeatedly stated Anscombe should start with Dan Biggar available to come on later in matches when the picture and outlook is in front of him, for he knows exactly what is required of him in those situations.”
John’s sentiments were echoed by fellow columnist Mark Orders, who says:
“Much midnight oil will be burned before the decision is made, but Wales beat South Africa with Anscombe as a starter and South Africa should have beaten England three weeks earlier.”
“Credit, too, to Anscombe for the composure he showed after his sticky display in the rain in Paris. The dink over the top he came up with for Owen Watkin’s try was a touch of class on a day when Wales were not exactly drowning in the stuff.”
Wales host England in Cardiff on February 24, with the Six Nations’ two unbeaten sides to battle for the overall championship lead.
