Cape Town – The
good news is tighthead prop Owen Franks doesn’t need surgery, the bad
news is he’s set to be sidelined for at least another month.
According to the Stuff website, Crusaders assistant coach Jason Ryan on Monday confirmed the 106-Test
All Black veteran had a small muscle-tear in his right shoulder, and the
best-case scenario would result in him returning against the Chiefs in
Fiji on June 1.
Franks, who is in his last season in New Zealand before heading
overseas, hasn’t played since the Crusaders’
home win against the Brumbies in Round 8.
Ryan was treating the latest development
as good news.
“The good thing is it doesn’t require surgery, so it will be a good rehab process,” Ryan said.
“It’s obviously a relief for everyone. It was touch and go there for a
bit. Get him back in a month, all going well. He’s got a good rehab plan
for the next four weeks, and all going well that’s when he will return
As a result of his rehab, Franks will miss this weekend’s top-of-the-table clash against the Sharks in Christchurch (Friday, May 3 at 09:35 SA time), and won’t be on the flight to South Africa for matches against the Bulls (Friday, May 10 at 19:10) and Stormers (Saturday, May 18 at 17:15).
