Champions League: Tottenham vs Ajax

Donny van de Beek’s early goal allowed Ajax Amsterdam to beat an injury-hit Tottenham 1-0 in the first leg of their semi-final on Tuesday.

Van de Beek’s 15th minute strike was just reward for the Ajax’s first-half dominance as Tottenham badly missed the attacking presence of the injured Harry Kane and suspended Son Heung-min.

Jan Vertonghen’s second half injury, which occurred when a punch from Ajax keeper Onana connected with his head, changed the shape of Spurs play and helped them get back into the game but they couldn’t find the killer touch.

David Neres hit the post 10 minutes from time, and had be buried that golden chance Spurs would be all but out of the 2018/19 Champions League.

While Kane is running again and remains an outside chance to play in the Champions League final he will not be fit for the trip to Amsterdam.

Former Manchester United man Daley Blind was the subject of some surprise praise from Sky sports Pundit Jamie Carragher for his sterling effort in marshalling the Ajax defence which did not look like conceding to Spurs all night.

“Ajax deserved the win tonight but not getting the 2nd away goal means Spurs are still well in this tie! De Jong & De Ligt very good again & look like future superstars. But thought Daley Blind was outstanding, great football brain,” Carragher Tweeted.

Spurs Midfielder Christian Eriksen conceded the team where nowhere near their best against Ajax.

“We were under-par, we didn’t play our best at all. In the first 20 minutes, we were ball-watchers. We need to change it up a lot for the next game,” Eriksen told BT Sport.

“We made them look a lot better. They are a good side, but we helped them along the way. It was our fault. We were better in the second half.

“No one wanted to play the first half we did. Everyone knew we didn’t compete. We still lost, but we were better in the second half.”
