“I will win this cup”

Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has one crucial game to salvage what has been a disappointing season, and is confident he will produce the goods.

Amakhosi have recorded their worst league finish in the PSL era, ending up in ninth place with just 39 points, their lowest points tally yet.

This has placed the German tactician’s performance under the microscope, as the club managed just five league wins under his watch since taking over from Giovanni Solinas in December 2018.

Cup form has, however, has been the only positive for the Soweto giants, who are preparing to contest the Nedbank Cup final against first division outfit TS Galaxy at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Quizzed about his future ahead of the clash, Middendorp refused to entertain questions about stepping down should Chiefs fail in Durban, instead suggesting that victory is certain.

“Whatever you’re saying in this moment, I have a contract over years and I will win this cup – that’s our target,” he told reporters.

“And I’m not going into it and looking into options you are creating now. Please, do me a favour, this is definitely something that I’m not answering.”

Middendorp won two trophies in his previous stint as Kaizer Chiefs coach, between 2005 and 2007, but was sacked midway through his second season after guiding the club to midtable.

Kick off on Saturday is at 19:00.
