Former Plymouth Argyle physio Paul Maxwell gets surprise Africa Cup of Nations call

Former Plymouth Argyle physio Paul Maxwell will be working with the Ghana squad at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt later this month.

Maxwell has been asked ‘completely out of the blue’ by the Ghana Football Association to take combine physio with a fitness and conditioning role.

Black Stars’ coach Kwesi Appiah has named his final 23-man squad for the 32nd edition of the tournament.

It includes two Premier League players – striker Jordan Ayew of Crystal Palace and Newcastle United midfielder Christian Atsu.

Ghana are making their 22nd appearance in the finals and are four times winners. They finished in fourth place in 2017 after being runners-up two years earlier.

The Black Stars will begin their Group F campaign against Benin in Ismailia on June 25.

They will then take on defending champions Cameroon, at the same venue, on June 29 before playing Guinea-Bissau in Suzez on July 2.
