Nigeria team news: Predicted line up vs Cameroon – Five changes | Football | Sport

Nigeria head into the crunch clash on the back of a sobering 2-0 defeat to Madagascar in their final match of the group stages.

Rohr made a number of changes to his XI with qualification to the knockouts already secured but paid the price with a below-par performance against a side 63 places below the Super Eagles in the FIFA rankings.

A number of star men are expected to return to against Cameroon, although captain John Obi Mikel may find himself dropped to the bench once more as his inconsistent tournament continues.

Daniel Akpeyi will return in goal, having kept clean sheets in Nigeria’s opening two matches before being replaced by Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

Kenneth Omeruo is also certain to come back into the side alongside William Troost-Ekong in central defence after missing out against Madagascar.

Leon Balogun should drop out but Chidozie Awaziem and Ola Aina are expected to retain their spots in the back four.

Wilfred Ndidi should replace John Ogu in central midfield and line up next to Stoke’s Oghenekaro Etebo.

Further forward, Moses Simon will be hopeful of a recall on the right flank and Alex Iwobi is also expected to start with the Arsenal ace potentially deployed as a No 10.

Ahmed Musa will continue on the left flank while Odion Ighalo should lead the line, meaning Paul Onuachu and Samuel Chukwueze will remain on the bench.

Nigeria have failed to impress so far this tournament, stumbling to a pair of 1-0 wins in their opening two matches before losing to Madagascar.

However, they have an excellent record in the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations and have reached the semi-finals in 11 of the past 12 tournaments they have qualified for.

The Super Eagles are three-time AFCON winners, last lifting the trophy back in 2013, but have it all to do against the defending champions.
