Lebogang Manyama scored twice in Kaizer Chiefs hard-fought 3-2 win over Highlands Park on Sunday and believes the team are only going to improve.
Manyama hadn’t scored in the PSL since 2017 but twice gave Chiefs the lead only to see Rodney Ramagalela twice level the match for Highlands Park.
Chiefs dug deep and Eric Matoho would eventually score the winner leaving Manyama to opine that the team will be a force to be reckoned with in the Premiership.
On the balance of play, the defeat was a bit harsh on Highlands, but Chiefs would have been happy with the character and fight they showed. Amakhosi found themselves under siege from the Lions of the North for much of the first half.
Manyama said they knew Highlands were going to run at them all day because they had a two-month pre-season.
“The team fought. We’ve been through a rough patch over the last couple of years but I think today showed what we can do and we can only get better as a team from here,” Manyama told Supersport TV.
“We knew when we come here it’s going to be very hard against a very fit team. They’ve had two months of pre-season so we know they would come running.”
Kaizer Chiefs confident in their quality
Ernst Middendorp seems to have set Kaizer Chiefs back on the path to regaining some of their former swagger.
Manyama said the team always believed they would come out on top. Although the match was technically an away game, Kaizer Chiefs enjoyed vociferous support from fans in a sold-out Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa. Himself a product of Tembisa, Manyama said the Glamour Boys needed to pay back the supporters for their continued support.
“We know we have better quality and we had to be patient. The crowd was amazing and this is the season where we have to play for the crowd. We get sold-out games week in and week out and we don’t show up, but I think it’s going to get better.”
Kaizer Chiefs face Black Leopards next Saturday in their next Premiership assignment. Leopards lost a Polokwane Derby at home to Polokwane City on Sunday.
