President Cyril Ramaphosa calls for members of the public, to submit their nominations for the country’s highest honour award in the National Orders.
How to bid your nominee for National Orders:
The nominees can consist of anyone in society, as the Presidency welcomes everyone from all ‘walks of life ‘to be a candidate of this prestigious award.
There’s one rule though, self-nominations, and nominations by relatives will translate into automatic disqualification. Nomination forms are available at the Presidency website, and they will close on 31 August 2019.
The successful candidates will be awarded in April 2020, and there are six categories within the National Orders.
National Orders: The Order of Mendi for Bravery
The award is allocated for individuals who have exceptionally performed acts of bravery.
There are silver, gold and bronze medals allocated for bravery executed. This order is awarded in gold for exceptional acts of bravery where the nominee would have put their own lives in danger or may have lost their lives in their efforts to save lives or property.
The Order of Ikhamanga
This order is for citizens who have excelled in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism or sport. It is awarded in three components. There is silver for excellent achievement, bronze for outstanding achievement and for exceptional achievement, there is gold.
The Order of Luthuli
This one is for South Africans who have served the interests of the country by contributing meaningfully in the struggle for democracy, human rights, nation-building, justice, peace and conflict resolution.
The Order of Luthuli in gold is awarded for exceptional contribution in each field, silver is awarded for excellent contribution, and the bronze is awarded for outstanding contribution.
The Order of Mapungubwe
This award is for achievements that went on to make an international impact and served the interests of the country. The first and highest category of this Order is awarded in platinum, then there is gold, silver and bronze.
The Order of the Companions of O.R. Tambo
The late Oliver Reginald Tambo played a pivotal role in the freedom struggle against apartheid, and this award in Tambo’s namesake is efficiently broken down into three parts:
- The Supreme Companion of OR Tambo in gold is set aside for citizens who actively promote the interests and aspirations of the country through “excellent cooperation and active expression of solidarity and support”.
- The Grand Companion of OR Tambo in silver is set aside for citizens who actively promote the interests and aspirations of the country in outstanding cooperation, solidarity and support.
- The Companion of OR Tambo in bronze is set aside for citizens who promote the interests and aspirations of South Africa through cooperation, solidarity and support.
